How to handle daily life in China.

Which checklist fits?

Open one topic to see what to check and keep.

01

Student

Arrival, campus, status, and departure.

Degree Student Timeline
Before departure: confirm admission, funding, housing, insurance, and the current university checklist.
First month: finish enrollment, campus access, and any conditional health or residence steps.
During study: track annual registration, permit and insurance cycles.
Before graduation: plan clearance, transcript, housing, status, and account decisions.
Short-Term and Language Study
Check which steps actually apply to your programme length. Do not copy a degree-student or one-year exchange checklist. Confirm visa wording, housing registration, insurance, university registration, and the required departure date.
Your First Month on Campus
Complete university check-in, student ID, course systems, Wi-Fi, library access, campus clinic information, bank and transport setup, and any appointment your university says is required. Keep every confirmation and deadline in one folder.
Residence and Health Steps
A residence-permit or health-certificate step is conditional, not universal. Check your entry document, programme length, university notice, and local authority instructions. Ask who books the appointment, which campus or centre to use, and what originals to bring.
Travel, Internships, and Part-Time Work
Student status does not automatically authorize off-campus work or internships. Confirm university approval and any required residence-permit annotation before starting. Check re-entry documents before travelling outside mainland China.
Wellbeing and Community
Save your university’s academic support, counselling, clinic, emergency, and international-office contacts. Join both local and international groups. Ask early when language, isolation, discrimination, or academic pressure starts affecting daily life.

01Getting started

Have you just arrived?

Handle registration, your responsible contact, connectivity, and a payment backup before convenience.

Four-task checklist: use the focused First 72 Hours guide →
02Money & payments

Alipay & WeChat Pay with a foreign card

Both accept international cards, but features and fees differ.

Setup

Binding failure: your name must match bank records exactly. If it fails twice, contact your bank instead of repeated retries.

Fees & limits (roughly, check in-app)

Small payments may be fee-free, while larger ones may carry about 3%. Check current caps and pay in RMB to avoid double conversion.

Common limits: foreign cards may not support transfers, red packets, or personal QR payments.
Backup: keep another card or some cash until mobile payment works.
03Daily transportation

Taxis, metro, bikes and bullet trains

Use local apps for rides and tickets.

Ride-hailing: DiDi

Address: use the destination’s Chinese name and check the car plate.

Metro & bus

In Alipay, open Transport, choose the city, and activate a ride QR code. A physical card is another option.

Shared bikes

Scan the official bike QR, then park in a marked zone and close the lock.

Watch out: unofficial QR stickers can be scams.

High-speed rail: the 12306 platform

Name: enter it exactly as 12306 instructs for your passport. A mismatch can block verification.
04Food & delivery

Meituan & Dianping: eating like a local

Use Meituan for delivery and Dianping for reviews or deals.

Need halal, vegetarian or vegan dining options? Open the Special Food Finder and choose the directory that matches your needs.

Delivery

放门口,不用打电话
= “Leave it at the door; no call needed.”

In restaurants: QR ordering & deals

Scan the table QR to order. Dianping may offer set-meal vouchers below menu price.

Payment: fees and foreign-card support vary by service; verify in-app.
Scan carefully: pay only via the restaurant's official table QR or the cashier's aggregated code, never a personal transfer QR.
05Social life

WeChat, Xiaohongshu, and finding your people

WeChat connects people; Xiaohongshu helps you search locally.

WeChat is the operating system

Xiaohongshu (RedNote) is the local search engine

Search Chinese keywords for restaurants, trips, and local how-to posts. Treat results as recommendations, not verified facts.

Reading tip: polished posts may be sponsored. Cross-check comments and sources.

06Rules & paperwork

The records that keep later steps moving

Keep proof, assign each task, and confirm local requirements.

Rule 1 · Accommodation registration

Keep proof: save the issued form, PDF, screenshot, confirmation message, and the exact address used.

Rule 2 · Check the document or visa-free policy that controls your stay

Check permitted stay, entries, expiry, sponsor, and any later application. Do not copy another person’s deadline.

Entry-policy update · 20 August 2026: Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam were added to China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy and Hainan’s 30-day visa-free entry policy. The 240-hour transit policy now covers 57 countries and 65 open ports across 24 provincial-level regions. It requires onward travel to a third country or region and is not the same as a general 10-day tourist visa exemption.
Russia: the current 30-day unilateral visa-free policy for ordinary Russian passports is officially stated to run through 14 September 2026. Verify the latest rule before travel after that date.

Rule 3 · Immigration applications from 15 September 2026

A new State Council regulation takes effect on 15 September 2026. Entry, exit, stay, and residence application purposes must be truthful and lawful; immigration and visa authorities may ask for supporting documents, materials, or electronic data when verifying identity and purpose. Keep your application story and supporting records consistent.

Rule 4 · Record who owns each task

Write the responsible person or office beside every step and keep your own copy.

Official help

Scope note: rules may vary by nationality, city, university, employer, sponsor, status, and stay length. Confirm anything affecting lawful stay or work with the responsible official office.
08Before leaving China

Do not leave the closing tasks for the airport.

Start several weeks before departure.

Study

Complete clearance, collect records, settle housing, and preserve account access.

Work

Collect final pay, employment records, cancellation papers, and status dates.

Everyone

Review accounts and keep recovery methods that work abroad.

LEARN FROM OTHER NEWCOMERS

What do people wish they had known earlier?

Short lessons, mistakes, and near-misses shared by people adapting to China. Read them before you repeat them — and add your own.

01Before you fly

Phones

Check your phone before moving. Recent US-model iPhones are eSIM-only and may not support a mainland Chinese local number, so you may need another device.

Phones & apps

Check whether your app-store region offers the Chinese apps you need before travelling.

Payments

Set up and verify Alipay or WeChat Pay before travelling if possible, then test a merchant payment.

Renting

Research apartments before arrival. Pressure can lead to a long contract that misses basics such as a usable kitchen.

Money

Keep enough savings for delays. Your first salary may arrive later than expected.

02The first weeks

Settling in

The first weeks can feel isolating and paperwork-heavy. Expect an adjustment period.

Mindset

Arrive with flexible expectations. Different does not always mean worse.

Registration

After moving or re-entering China, check whether accommodation registration is required. Hotels usually handle it; private homes may not.

03Everyday life

Language

Get a reliable translation app and learn a few everyday phrases before arrival.

Ride-hailing

DiDi drivers may call or ask for the last digits of your phone number to find you.

Toilets

Carry tissues. Some toilets do not provide paper.

Personal space

Crowded subways may feel closer than you expect. It is normal during busy periods.

Culture

Some people may ask for—or take—a photo out of curiosity.
